ZUGZWANG

INTERACTION | NEON: 15 x 105 CM | SALT AND PEPPER | 2013

“Zugzwang” is a situation in chess in which making a move causes the immediate worsening of the position of the player who makes it. In 1923 Aron Nimzowitsch won a game of chess against Friedrich Sämisch, known as the immortal zugzwang game. The Zugzwang work is meant to register the presence of every viewer. Nobody will see the work in its original shape, only what they will find there after the previous viewer. The viewer is forced to participate actively in the process of creation. I don’t feel responsible for the final shape of the project, I will have no influence on it. The role of the artist is limited to arranging the situation and the space. The installation comprises the Zugzwang neon hanging on the wall and salt and pepper arranged into a chess board on the floor of the gallery. Salt and pepper have been used in the project because of the tradition of spreading them on the floor in specific situations, present in the Polish culture. The smell is a significant, sensual part of the project.
